Glorious Twelfth
The Glorious Twelfth refers to 12 August, the start of the shooting season for Grouse. It is one of the busiest days in the season (which lasts until the end of December), with large amounts of game being shot. The season for pheasants and partridges starts later in the year, and extends to the end of January, but has much less impact on flying plans.
Grouse shooting provides a significant income to many landowners, and the management of habitat provides a livelihood for a range of people, including gamekeepers. Grouse shooting probably represents the greatest threat in terms of access to our flying sites. We may not consider it to be particularly 'glorious' because it imposes limitations on our flying sites. However, we share the countryside and it is vital that we respect the wishes of others. Pen Hill has already been denied to us because of grouse; and Stags Fell, Nappa Scar and Ilkley could very easily go the same way.
Please note the restrictions shown on the Home and Sites pages. We don't want to lose a site (or a pilot!).
Nappa Scar and Stags Fell - No XC flights between Aug - Dec.
Kilnsley - Site closed from 1st August to 31st December. No flying during this period.
Addleborough - No flying during the months of Sep - Nov unless prior approval obtained using the contact numbers on the website.
Bishopdale - No flying August 12 – December 31.
Wether Fell – Shoots happen throughout the year usually on a Saturday. If we get the dates we'll let you know. It's the area NE of take-off, along the Cam High Road. If you see the obvoius signs of a shoot stay to the SW and you should be OK.
